Winterberries-January-Holidays-on-Frugal-Guidance-2

Our monthly holiday list is a new feature on Frugal Guidance 2. It can be used for:

  • Writing prompts for writers and bloggers,
  • Travellers,
  • Meeting planners,
  • Businesspeople,
  • Partiers (who need an excuse for a party, or not), and
  • People who create new celebrations for their cause.

January

The word, January, comes from the Latin Ianuarius, after Janus, the god of beginnings and transitions. January was not always the beginning of the year in the old Roman Calendar, that distinction belonged to March for many years. January became the start of the year around 450 BC. Even so, it wasn’t until the 16th century that European countries began making January 1 the official beginning of the year.

Other terms for January include the Roman Ianuarius, the Saxon Wulf-monath (wolf month), the Finnish tammikuu (heart of winter), and Charlemagne’s Wintarmanoth (winter or cold month).

January’s birthstone is the garnet, representing constancy. Floral emblems are the pink carnation (Dianthus caryophyllus), the Prunus mume (in China), and in Japan the Camelia sinensis (the tea plant).

The Christian celebration of Christmas was traditionally celebrated for twelve days, ending on January 6 with Epiphany (or Twelfth Night), which is the celebration of the visitation of The Three Kings. In Latin Countries, Epiphany is also the beginning of the Carnival Season, which culminates in Mardi Gras (which comes relatively early this year on Feb. 9).

2016

Lest we forget, 2016 will be significant in many ways. According to Chase’s Calendar of Events (and my own counting) 2016 marks:

  • The Transit of Mercury
  • The Games of the XXXI Olympiad in Brazil
  • The 50th SuperBowl football extravaganza
  • The 50th Celebration of Kwanzaa
  • The 75th anniversary of the attack on Pearl Harbor
  • The 100th birthday of the National Park Service in the U.S.

Please note that the holiday lists below include religious and secular holidays, United States, national, and International holidays, commercial and governmental commemorations, and serious and frivolous celebrations. Lengthy as these calendars are, they are by no means complete. If you find an error, please offer a correction in the comments, but remember that not all holidays are celebrated on the same day in every country or by every church or religion. A list of sources and other resources completes our list, below.
