Fun April Facts

April is the fourth month of the Gregorian calendar and is the first full month of Spring in the northern hemisphere, and the first full month of Autumn in the southern.

The name April comes from the Latin Aprilis but the history gets murky beyond that. Many say it is derived from the Latin verb apeirire meaning “to open”, referring to the opening of flowers in spring. However, since the first of April was also the celebration of the goddess Venus, who had the Roman name Aphrilis, from the Greek Aphros or Aphrodite, some think this is one more month named after a Roman deity. (The upshot is that nobody knows for sure.)

Outside of the influence of early Rome, the Anglo-Saxons called April ēastre-monaþ after a goddess whose name was later appropriated by Christians for Easter, which often falls in April (but not this year).

The Eastern Orthodox Church prepares for Easter (on May 1st this year), with most of its Lenten preparations in April. See our March Calendar for an explanation why Orthodox Easter is so much later than that of the western church this year.

An interesting superstition is that on St. Mark’s Eve, on April 24th, the ghosts of those who are doomed to die within the year will be seen to pass into the church. As superstitions go, it’s surprising it hasn’t been appropriated into the finals of basketball’s March Madness, which also occurs this month.

U.S. Tax Deadline

For U.S. taxpayers, you have an extra three days to mail (or submit online) your tax forms, by April 18th. (Thanks to, I hear, an obscure Washington, DC civic holiday on the 15th and the weekend.) That might not apply to state taxes in some states, though. Reports are that, with the increased popularity of filing online, fewer post offices are likely to stay open late to collect forms. So plan accordingly. (You’ve got three extra days, for heaven’s sake.)

April Fools

April Fool’s Day (or All Fool’s Day) is, of course, on April 1st. In the U.S., even the press celebrates the day by adding one news item that is patently ridiculous, but sounds possible, so watch for April Fool’s retractions on the 2nd. Since the entire election cycle in the U.S. is patently ridiculous this year, one would think that would suffice. In some French and Italian regions, it is April Fish Day, from the practice of attaching a paper fish to the backs of unsuspecting victims. Sounds a bit more civilized than a “Kick Me” sign.

Sports

In sports, we see the finale of the NCAA Basketball Tournament for both Men’s and Women’s divisions (also known as March Madness). The pro NBA season ends soon thereafter, on April 13th. The American baseball season begins and NHL Hockey ends this month. In golf, the U.S. Masters Tournament is April 7-10. Various amateur sports have national tournaments this month in preparation of the Summer Olympics in August.

Birthstones, Fruit & Vegetables, and Flowers

April’s birthstones are diamond and crystal. The fruit and vegetables for the month are strawberries, asian pears and tomatillos. April’s flowers are the Daisy and the Sweet Pea.

And does anybody think it’s a coincidence that April 30th is both National Oatmeal Cookie Day and National Raisin Day? I think not!

There are whole boatloads of holidays in April (at least 19 on April 30th alone), so let’s get started.

For one spring week out of the year, Dover, New Jersey, is transformed by the white blossoms of the trees that line the downtown streets. The top photo is of Blackwell Street. The second photo features the tower of the town’s so-called Opera House.

The third photo with the pink blossoms is of Hurd Park, in Dover along Route 46. The tree in the foreground is likely the largest tree in that part of the county. Photos are by the author, Andrew Brandt, “Developed” with Photoshop and Topaz Labs plugins.
